Subject Description
Cohort B During our sophomore year we worked with several seniors class of 1999. We called our group of seniors Cohort B. The group of seniors was pretty diverse. There were a few White students, a few Latinos, a few African Americans, one or two Asians and one Pakistani. We interviewed members of the Cohort B group and had them as guest speakers in our class. Even after the Cohort B members graduated we still kept in touch and during the summer of ‘99 we had a small reunion.
Presentations The Santa Monica Futures Project does presentations based on their research. We do presentations based on our research groups. The groups are: the Hip-Hop group, the Family group, the Resistance group and the Language group. We present our research to different groups and people like in UCLA all of the research groups presented to Dr. Solarzano's class.
Involvement Most of the Santa Monica Futures Project students are involved in after school activities. Some of the most common activities are sports and school clubs. Some of the sports are: football, wrestling, soccer, track, baseball and softball. Some of the school clubs are: BSU (Black Student Union), Mecha and Committee 41.
Computers For a couple of months the futures project was trying to figure out a way of how we could keep in touch with each other outside of school. We came up with the idea of talking and e-mailing each other threw the internet. It was a good idea, but not all of the students had computers. So we had to do something and we did by getting computers for every student in the class that didn't have one. Since our program is in connection with UCLA, they paid for the computers that we needed. We received new I- MAC'S. We had to go pick them up at John Adams Middle School, but before we received them Mr. Jacobs who is a computer teacher showed us how to use them. Ever since we got them in late January most of the students in the Futures project have been keeping in touch with each other by e-mailing each other. It was a good idea because we could send our homework to our teachers so that they could correct it before we turn it in.
