Tara Yasgo 6/10/99 | During our freshman year, Tara Yasgo, a PHD student at UCLA in her graduate school of education, shared her research involving the negative portrayal of Chicanos in the media. With her presentation we were able to recognize minorities that are negative and looked upon within the entertainment industry. Students of color are often the ones who don't know how to read and write. They are troublemakers who are involved in drugs and do drugs. Why is it so common to see them in these positions? Some people don't even seem to realize what is occurring. - Veronica Casillas |
Betita Martinez | On February 1999 Elizabeth Betita Martinez came to room H203 in
Santa Monica High School to speak about her experiences being in "La
Causa." Not only did she speak about "La Causa" but she also explained
all of the different labels that people of Spanish descent use to categorize
themselves. These labels include labels Latino/a, Chicano/a, Mexican, Central
American, and Hispanic. She also explained the origin of the word Hispanic.
"La Causa" was an organization of people who would strike to get equal
rights for Latino/as. Ms. Martinez was a part of the group "La Causa", she
made a video showing some of the strikes and clips of interviews of people
who were also involved in "La Causa". She also explained where the term
"Hispanic" came from. "Hispanic" was a word that was made up to
categorize all people from Spanish origin in statistics and other projects like
that. -Emely Ramirez
